- Intel Haswell expected in March-April 2013
A leaked Intel roadmap reveals Intel's Haswell architecture is slated for March-April 2013:
According to the conventional idea of Intel's tick-tock CPU development strategy, it will be built on the 22 nm fab process, which will have gained some maturity by then. Intel follows a "tick-tock" product development model. Every year, Intel's product lineup sees either of the two. A "tock" brings in a new x86 architecture, a "tick" miniaturizes it to a newer silicon fabrication process. Earlier reports indicated that Haswell Core processors will be based on a newer socket, the LGA1150, and hence it will not be compatible with LGA1155 platforms.

- Intel Haswell to introduce transactional memory
FUD Zilla reports Intel's Haswell architecture will introduce Transactional Synchronisation Extensions(TSX):Transactional memory makes the creation of reliable multithreaded programs easier by using a system where complex operations can be performed at the same time and in isolation from each other. The system has been seen in database management but making a chip work using it is new.
Intel calls it Transactional Synchronisation Extensions(TSX). There is the Hardware Lock Elision (HLE) allows easy conversion of lock-based programs into transactional programs in a way that's backwards compatible with current processors. Then there is the Restricted Transactional Memory (RTM) is a more complete transactional memory implementation.

- AMD sends Verdetrol 1GHz pills to journalists
Legit Reviews reports AMD pulled a new marketing stunt by sending journalists a package with a prescription bottle from AMD with 28 "Verdetrol" 1GHz pills. It seems to be a marketing campaign for the upcoming Radeon HD 7770 "Cape Verde", which is said to run at 1GHz. Interestingly, AMD even went through the trouble of creating a Verdetrol mini-site.
The bottle says that the pills are for natural performance enhancement and that we are to give our video card 1 tablet by the fan intake four times a day. This is obviously a marketing promotion for an upcoming product release of a video card that is clocked at 1GHz. The AMD Radeon HD 7770 (Cape Verde) is said to run at 1GHz, so this could mean that the Radeon HD 7770 is very close to launching. The label on the bottle was well done with 28 doses (28nm manufacturing process), a prescription number of 1337-2012 (if you don't know what 1337 means hit alt+f4) and that the tablets are 1GHz (the core clock speed of an upcoming product). We'll let you guys guess the meaning of Verdetrol, but NVIDIA's colors are green.

- Prolimatech reveals two new LGA2011 cooler designs
TPU reports Prolimatech is toying with two new cooling designs for Intel's LGA2011 platform. Revealed below is a slimmer version of the Prolimatech Genesis that stacks both heatsinks parallel to the plane rather than perpendicular. The company also shared CGI-renderings of a new design in which the heatpipe takes three sharp U-turns, with an aluminium fin stack in each of these U-turns.
The second cooler (last two images above), has a slightly more exotic shape, in which the heat pipe take three sharp U-turns, in the long-arms of each of these U-turns is an aluminum fin stack, and the CPU base is in the center. Unlike the other cooler design, this cooler has a side-flow ventilation. The aluminum fin stacks don't propagate all the way down, to make room for the memory areas below. As for the ventilation, a single 120 mm fan can be attached in the central portion, more fans can be attached to the aluminum fin stacks at convenient locations. There is no word on when (or if) this design will materialize.

- Micron reveals low-standby-power DDR3Lm
Micron introduced DDR3Lm, a new type of low-power memory that focuses on reduced standby power consumption to increase the battery life of mobile devices.Micron Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq:MU) is extending its legacy of memory leadership by introducing a new product category of low-power DDR3 solutions targeted at the tablet and ultrathin markets. These 2-gigabit (Gb) and 4Gb "DDR3Lm" solutions focus on low self-refresh power (IDD6) for longer battery life, while maintaining the high performance and cost effectiveness of PC DRAM.
The first 2Gb DDR3Lm will provide up to 50 percent self-refresh power savings versus standard 2Gb DDR3L while driving performance up to -1600 MT/s when needed. Micron's 4Gb DDR3Lm product delivers the same optimized power efficiency as the 2Gb part, with a reduced chip count that is ideally suited for ultrathin and tablet customers. Both 2Gb and 4Gb DDR3Lm will be adopted into Micron's 30-nanometer (nm) class to further optimize the power and performance features, with the 4Gb device hitting a 3.7mA IDD6 target in standby mode, yet still supporting speeds up to -1866 MT/s.
"Power reduction is becoming ever more critical in the fast growing ultrathin markets. Micron's expertise with traditional PC memory requirements enables these markets to enjoy high performance targets and optimal cost efficiencies," said Robert Feurle, vice president for Micron's DRAM marketing. "The combination of our commitment to customer collaboration and dedication to leading the way in DRAM technologies has proven highly successful, and this new class of 30nm DRAM continues to deliver on that promise."
"As computing becomes more and more mobile, longer battery life is increasingly valuable to end users," said Geof Findley, Intel's senior memory enabling manager. "The reduced standby power consumption of low-power memory is a move in the right direction."
Sampling of Micron's new DDR3Lm low-power product line begins now, with volume production on 30nm class devices expected to begin in 2Q'12. For more information about DDR3Lm, visit http://www.micron.com/products/dram/ddr3-sdram.

- Google said to be working on cloud storage service
Word is going around that Google will release a Dropbox-like cloud storage service. Anticipated to be released in the coming weeks or months, the service will be free or charge for most users, although storing large quantities of data will require a fee.
The Google service, called Drive, is "expected to launch in the coming weeks or months." It will be free of charge for most users, although the Wall Street Journal says large quantities of online storage will be available for a fee. (That fee, incidentally, is said to be less than what Dropbox currently charges.) Google Drive should behave in much the same way as Dropbox, allowing users to upload large files into the cloud from PCs and mobile devices, and to then share those files with a link.
Rumors about a Google cloud storage service have been around for years, but so far it hasn't been released yet.

- Intel DX79SI motherboard gets PCI Express 3.0 support with BIOS update
Legit Reviews noticed Intel released a BIOS update for its DX79SI "Siler" motherboard that activates PCI Express 3.0 support.
You can download the BIOS update over here.
Intel just sent us word that they have released BIOS Version 0424 (SIX7910J.86A.0424.2012.0127.1620) for their DX79SI motherboard! This BIOS update includes 20 fixes, updates or new features! We've been asking Intel why their flagship Sandy Bridge-E motherboard doesn't support PCI Express 3.0 for weeks and it appears that with this BIOS update the board now supports the PCI Express 3.0 specification. This is good news for AMD Radeon HD 7900 video card owners as they can run their card at its full potential. Sure, the gains of PCI Express 3.0 are hardly noticeable, but at least the board now supports it!

- Skyrim developer team shows off game ideas (video)
After the completion of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Bethesda's developer team was given one week to build whatever they wished to see in the game. A video of some of these ideas was shown off at D.I.C.E. 2012 and it contains many things that would be pretty awesome if they ever made it into the game. It includes seasonal foliage, new weapons like spears and ice and fire arrows, mounted combat, dragon mounting, Kinect-enabled shouts, new creatures like werebears and enormous mud crabs, a Lycantrophy skill tree, flying vampires, and much more.
Howard made no promises that anything seen in the demo reel would ever make it into the game, whether as a title update or downloadable content down the line. But it did showcase the depth of what the Bethesda team built and a creative instinct within the team that matches the mod community's enthusiasm, stoked recently by the release of the official Creation Kit.
